American Basswood

This week’s tree is the American Basswood. It is easily identified by its unique bark and round fruit. Bees make high-quality honey from their flowers during the summer, and their inner bark is so fibrous that the American Indians would weave products like baskets and rope from it. The wood is very soft and very susceptible to rot, which usually leads to the demise of the tree.
